Fit Your Swing to the Shot at Hand

From Justin Parsons On April 04, 2023
Having sound golf swing mechanics is important, but as Titleist staff member Justin Parsons cautions, there is no single perfect swing. The best swings in golf are adaptable and elite shot-makers swing the club in a myriad of ways to control the golf ball and make it fly, curve, spin and roll in infinite variety.

Some situations – playing into the wind for example – may call for a low shot vs. a high shot. On some holes you may need a little more distance off the tee. On others, you
... may need a little more control and finesse. And in certain situations, like the approach shot that Justin demonstrates in this video, the odds of getting close to the pin are greatly improved when you're able to work the ball around trouble and towards the hole.

Understanding the right shot to play and fitting your swing to execute that shot is what course management is all about. But it's also at the heart of golf artistry. As Justin advises, let the entire scope of the shot speak to you, not just the yardage that you gun with your range finder. Consider the design of the hole, the lie, the wind, the elevation and contours of the green - these and scores of other subtle factors will reveal the ideal shot to play and open the door to your imagination and creativity. And when you start matching your swing to the shot you see in your mind's eye? That's when you go from being a golfer to being a player.
